Respected Colleague
During my tenure on council, I have worked with a diverse group of individuals who have
chosen to serve their community. Although at times, we have disagreed on issues, I have
listened with an open mind, and have learned from their diverse backgrounds. Our discussions
have helped to crystallize the issues and bring different points of view to the
table. Decision-making is about gathering facts, listening to people’s concerns on
both sides of issues, and taking appropriate action that is in the best interest of our community
as a whole. Better decisions are made by taking the time to listen to diverse groups, ask questions
and formulate an action plan that works for Downers Grove.
I am a member of the Legislative Committee of DuPage Mayors and Managers. This committee helps to
formulate the legislative action plan for the area communities. For years, I have participated in
the Springfield Drive Down and at times served as a group leader. This year, with my council colleagues,
staff and the Chamber of Commerce, we lobbied our legislators for the additional funding needed for
the Belmont Grade Separation Project. We were successful and this project is now becoming a
reality providing a much-needed public safety project in our community.
Soliciting input, listening to diverse points of view, and asking the hard questions to make good
decisions have contributed to earning the respect of my colleagues, staff and residents.
